The liver situated in the upper right part of the abdominal cavity. It is the largest organ of the body, weighing 1200 -1600 gm. Internally it is divided in to eight segments( territories) . The liver has a wide variety of functions, and the main functions are removal of harmful substances from blood and to produce bile to assist in digestion of food.
When the liver has broken down harmful substances, it’s by-products are excreted into the bile or blood. Bile by-products enter the intestine and ultimately leave the body in the form of stool. Blood by-products are filtered out by the kidneys, and leave the body in the form of urine.
. Its structure is complex & highly vascular. Surgeries in liver are with risk of bleeding, bile like and some time liver failure. But liver have wonderful power of regeneration. Resected (removed) or damaged part of liver regenerate quickly, which is completed in six to eight weeks time. This is why various kinds of liver resection & transplantation are possible.
