What is Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery :
Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery is the Surgery of Liver, Bile duct, gallbladder & Pancreas. These organs are the central organs of metabolism, digestion and control of body systems. Surgery in these organs is complex and complicated. It is associated with risk of hemorrhage, bile leak, pancreatic leak, sepsis and multi organ failure. Well planned systematic surgeries of these organs offer cure or survival benefit to most of the patients affected by diseases of these organs. Well functioning Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery facilities are the fundamental for starting and continuing liver transplant services. This is one of the rapidly advancing surgical strategies in the modern scientific arena.
Hepato- Biliary- Pancreatic Surgery in Bangladesh:
Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery as organized service facility was not available in Bangladesh previously. The patients suffering with complex surgical conditions of these vital organs were deprived of such facilities. Many of them were leaving the country for treatment in abroad.
The first department of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery of Bangladesh started at BIRDEM Hospital on July 26, 1999. The department was started by Prof.Mohammad Ali after his return from abroad. This department is now a full-fledged one and involved in management of Hepato Biliary Pancreatic Surgeries in large scale. The complex surgeries include various forms of liver resections, pancreatic resections, biliary reconstructions and all kind of gallbladder surgeries.
This department organized and successfully performed first two successful liver transplants in Bangladesh. First liver transplant on June 03, 2010 and second one on August 06, 2011. Both the donors and recipients are well and back to their normal life. It has earned good reputation in home & abroad and working as milestone for development of liver transplant services in Bangladesh.
This department is relentlessly working to establish a state of the art liver transplant centre, so that the end stage liver disease patients of Bangladesh will get continues services of liver transplant in their own country.
